GM 100-year celebration charged with electricity
Most companies that reach their 100th anniversary would trumpet their past accomplishments. General Motors, which celebrated its centennial on Sept. 16, focused on a future car, the electric-powered Chevrolet Volt, which could lead to huge changes in this country's automotive industry.

Top GM vehicles
Below is a list of the top 10 best-selling GM vehicles in its 100-year history.

MOST SIGNIFICANT VEHICLES
As part of its centennial, General Motors listed the 10 production vehicles that had the biggest effect on the company, regardless of sales: 1. EV1 (1996): the modern industry's first electric production vehicle 2. Pontiac GTO (1964): first muscle car 3. Chevrolet Bel Air (1955): symbol of the "Golden Era" of styling 4. Chevrolet Corvette (1953): first fiberglass-body sports car 5. Saab 9-2 (1950): A leap in functional design, it applied aeronautical design to cars 6. Opel Olympia (1936): first car built with unibody assembly (body and frame as a single unit) 7. Cadillac V-16 (1930): The first production car with a 16-cylinder engine, it helped establish the Cadillac brand as a luxury icon. 8. LaSalle (1927): first production car by a professional designer 9. Cadillac (7 models) (1912): the first cars with electric self-starters, an innovation that made cars appealing to a much broader group of buyers who couldn't use a hand crank 10. Cadillac Model 30 (1910): first mass-produced closed-body car

GM: A century of historic innovations worldwide
In its 100th year, General Motors remains the world's largest automaker, although Toyota almost overtook it in total sales last year and is likely to do so this year.
